Back-to-school checklist - College Edition (and why Renters’ Insurance Matters)

Back-to-college renters insurance checklist: cover tech, backpack, mini-fridge, furniture, clothes & textbooks. AHI finds your best policy from 42+ carriers.

It’s officially Summer, but we know that school is just around the corner. Are you prepared for your college-aged kids to head back to school??

Whether you’ve given it a lot of thought or just started thinking about it, we’ve put together a checklist, so you don’t forget anything!

1.Technology

We know that technology is expensive, and nowadays it’s a necessity for students. Whether it's a laptop, tablet, or phone, many professors utilize software and online systems for class. Protect your expensive devices from theft or accidental damage with renters' insurance. AHI can help you find plans with personal property coverage.

✅ The tech that’s recommended to purchase heavily varies between majors, so it’s best to visit your college and review their resources. Here’s a list of a few below:

2. Backpack or Bag

It’s no different than high school, you’ll need a sturdy bag to hold your belongings. With your essentials all in one place for convenience and function, it has its pros, but the cons are that it could be stolen or damaged. Renters’ insurance can cover replacements of damage or theft.

✅ Tip: Buy one that is weather resistant or waterproof. In the KS area, rain can be unpredictable, and you don’t want to get caught in a downpour and have all your papers and technology get wet. Although it’s not a necessity, it can help!

3. Get a Mini Fridge

This one’s not a necessity, but believe me, living with a roommate, oftentimes more than one, means a packed fridge! It can be nice to have a place for your favorite snacks and beverages. Mini fridges are costly to replace if they break or are stolen. AHI can ensure your policy includes appliances.

✅ Tip: A mini fridge is especially helpful in a dorm! Save time by having snacks and beverages that are quick and easy to consume just a few feet away. No need to go down to the dining hall, just when you need a soda for a mid-day pick me up, a bowl of cereal for breakfast, or even some yogurt for a snack.

4. Furniture

You’ll find that a desk and chair can be quite useful. Whether it’s for heavy homework days, when your favorite coffee shop is closed, or when your library spot is taken, you can just work at your desk! From study desks to cozy bedding, renters' insurance covers these items against fire, theft, or water damage.

✅ Tip: Create a study space that you enjoy being in. When the homework, projects, and tests stack up, it can be overwhelming. It’s helpful having a space that you feel comfortable and motivated to work in.

5. Clothing and Personal Items

Your wardrobe is valuable! Whether you went out to get some new pieces for college, or you’ve been filling your closet throughout the years, you wouldn’t want anything to happen to your wardrobe. Renters’ insurance protects it from risks like laundry room theft or apartment/dorm mishaps.

✅ Tip: To save time, make a small slit at the bottom of a trash bag, slide it over the hanger, pull it down over your clothes and secure the bottom. This way, your clothes are protected without spending hours folding or packing them.

6. Textbooks & Supplies

I know what you're thinking... ‘in a digital world, who’s going to use a paperback textbook!?’ Well, you’d be surprised, many professors still require some purchases of physical textbooks and other materials. If your professor requires them, don’t let lost or damaged textbooks derail your semester. Instead, let renters’ insurance cover you.

✅ Tip: Textbooks and materials can be expensive. It’s common for instructors to have access to discounts for students, so be sure to check with them before you purchase your required class material.

7. Purchase Renter’s Insurance

Not only does it protect the previous items we discussed, but it’s typically required by landlords or property management. Having renters’ insurance protects the college experience. One accident or theft can put extreme financial stress on your college kid and your family.

✅ Tip: Be prepared! Don’t let unforeseen events ruin the experience. Purchase renters’ insurance so your child can focus on their studies knowing they’re protected.
